CHAPTER 12
Harley
I sat at the kitchen table with half of my mind focused on the textbook in front of me. The other half wouldnât stop reliving what had happened last night. I raised my phone and sent a text.
Thank you for last night
Donât thank me. Itâs weird ;)
Mason came into the kitchen, half naked except for the gray sweatpants hugging his hips. I closed my textbook and eyed him. âETA on your apartment?â
âGood morning to you too,â he said as he rifled through the cabinets.
âIâm serious, Mason. Iâd like to have my house back.â
âSoon, Iâm sure,â he said as he slammed another cupboard loud enough to make me jump.
âJesus, Mary, and Joseph! Must you be so annoying?â
He walked over to me, stepping closer until his Adonis belt hovered right beside my head. I swallowed hard. He leaned over and rubbed a firm hand along the back of my neck. The touch felt familiar, but I couldnât understand why. Weâd never been close enough to comfort each other this way.
âAnnoying you is too much fun, Hal,â he whispered in my ear, and his warm breath sent shivers up my body. âWhy do you hate me so much?â
My eyes narrowed, and I drew away from his touch. âYou know why.â
âDo you hate me, or are you afraid of me?â
I scoffed. âI hate you,â I said, but I wasnât sure if that was the whole of it.
Iâd feared him when the police took him to the station. I remembered finding out what heâd done and telling my father I didnât want him to stay with us anymore. Rapist, abuser, dangerous. I called him every name in the book. My father just kept saying, âHeâs a kid. Heâs a teenager.â
I was a kid. I was a teenager. And I never assaulted someone. I also didnât watch multiple men assault someone and say nothing.
Mason was a bad person, and I hated him for all heâd put me through. It was like he preyed on my fear of him before he moved out. Heâd corner me or make sure he touched me when he talked to me.
âI think youâre afraid of me.â He leaned into me and put his hand on my shoulder. âYour breaths quicken when Iâm near you. When I touch you, I see the throb of your rapid heartbeat in your neck.â
âN-no,â I stammered.
âYes, Hal. Say it. Say that youâre afraid of me.â
âNo,â I said more firmly. I refused to give him that satisfaction.
His hand rose from my shoulder to my throat. His voice was breathy. âAre you afraid Iâll touch you?â Like a predator with its prey in its grasp, he groaned at my suffering.
A tear squeezed past my clenched eyelids, and I grabbed his wrist and pushed him away. I rose from my chair and cleared my throat to force my confidence. âYes, Mason, Iâm scared of you. Things you used to do to annoy me took on a new meaning in my head, things from before you even did what you did.
